About Us |
When a family learns that their child is visually impaired, chronically ill, or disabled in any way, they are overwhelmed by a series of profoundly confusing feelings. Feelings of shock, helplessness, fear, denial, depression, sadness, anger, guilt, disappointment, and uncertainty prevail. This "mourning" period is a critical time for the entire family because it is this very experience of mourning that ultimately allows each family member to pick up the pieces and move on.

Since 1987, the INSTITUTE FOR FAMILIES has offered counseling and support to families facing the devastating diagnosis of visual impairment in their child. The Institute for Families is there for every member of the family during the many difficult days, weeks, and months of treatment.
- Assistance & Support
Through multilingual consultation and family therapy, we provide skilled professional assistance to enable a family to cope with the news that their child will lose his or her vision in one or both eyes. We provide for information for families and their physicians through the publication of medical journal articles, books, videotapes, and other training materials. The Institute for Families can also help locate appropriate infant care programs, school settings, learning aids, and much more through a resource and referral network available to families and professionals internationally.

INSTITUTE FOR FAMILIES is a non-profit organization and all of our services are provided
at no cost to families and professionals. Funding is provided by private donations. We are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) exempt organization.
